Remembering Nasir Kazmi: The Voice of Modern Urdu Ghazal

LAHORE (AIA) The death anniversary of renowned Urdu poet Nasir Kazmi, considered a pioneer of the modern Urdu ghazal, was observed on Sunday.
Born in Ambala in 1925, Kazmi passed his matriculation examination from Muslim High School Ambala and enrolled at Government College Lahore for a bachelor’s degree. However, he had to discontinue his studies due to the turmoil during the partition of the subcontinent.
Kazmi worked briefly in the Welfare and Agriculture Departments before joining Radio Pakistan, where he wrote popular sketches of classical Urdu poets, including Mir Taqi Mir, Nazir, Wali, and Insha.
His first poetry collection, Barg-e-Nay, was followed by Dewaan and Pahli Barish. His collection of poems, Khawab-e-Nishat, further cemented his literary legacy.
In addition to poetry, Kazmi was an accomplished prose writer and penned the drama series Sur Ki Chhaya. He passed away on March 2, 1972 in Lahore and was laid to rest in Mominpura graveyard.
