
Empowering Women Behind Bars: Awareness Programme Held at Central Jail Peshawar
— March 12, 2025PESHAWAR (AIA) In observance of International Women’s Day, UN Women Pakistan organised an awareness programme at Central Jail Peshawar on Wednesday to highlight reforms and initiatives aimed at empowering women prisoners and improving their access to justice.
The event featured Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Deputy Speaker Suraiya Bibi as the chief guest. Other key attendees included MPA Shehla Bano, former MPA Ayesha Bano, Inspector General of Prisons Usman Mehsud, lawyers from the Peshawar High Court, Additional Secretary of Home Nagmana, members of the Supervisory Committee on Prisons and Human Rights, and women inmates.
Speakers discussed ongoing and proposed reforms, focusing on measures to facilitate justice, rehabilitation, and support for female prisoners.
In her closing remarks, Suraiya Bibi commended the reforms and expressed hope that similar initiatives would be implemented across the province’s prisons, fostering a rehabilitative environment that helps inmates rebuild their lives after release.
Following the programme, she visited the women and children in the prison, distributed gifts, and shared an Iftar meal with inmates and prison staff.
