Peshawar’s Anti-Begging Drive Nets Hundreds, Exposes Gangs

PESHAWAR (AIA) The Peshawar district administration has initiated a large-scale operation targeting professional beggars and organised begging syndicates across the provincial capital. The crackdown, led by Commissioner Riaz Khan Mehsud, aims to dismantle groups exploiting vulnerable individuals, including women and children.
The operation involves a joint effort by multiple departments, including the social welfare department, excise, police, Rescue 1122, and Civil Defence. Eight teams have been deployed to conduct raids in various parts of the city. On the first day of the operation, hundreds of beggars were apprehended, including women and children. Authorities also uncovered a 24-member gang that provided housing and transportation to beggars, further exposing the organised nature of the network.
Commissioner Mehsud revealed that professional beggars in Peshawar’s commercial areas can earn up to Rs 10,000 daily, with a significant share going to their handlers. He assured that arrested beggars would receive skill training and livelihood support, while child beggars would be enrolled in basic education programmes. Strict legal action, including imprisonment, is being taken against handlers and organisers.
This initiative is part of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s broader efforts to address organised begging and provide long-term solutions for vulnerable individuals. Citizens have welcomed the operation, expressing hope for a cleaner and safer city.
