First Pakistani Named Vice President of Silk Road Alliance

ISLAMABAD (AIA) In a historic milestone, Professor Dr Zahid Akram has been elected Vice President of the Silk Road Wheat Innovation Alliance (SRWIA) for a four-year term. Dr Akram is the first Pakistani academic to hold this esteemed position among member countries, including Russia, China, Turkey, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
Dr Akram, Chairman of the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics at Arid Agriculture University in Rawalpindi, has brought global recognition to Pakistan’s agricultural research. His election underscores the growing contributions of Pakistani academics in tackling food security challenges through agricultural innovation, improved crop production, and the development of sustainable food systems.
The SRWIA, founded by Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University in Yangling, China, is dedicated to advancing wheat research and improving food security along the Silk Road. Dr Akram’s leadership is expected to bolster innovation across member nations and strengthen efforts to ensure global food security.
This achievement marks a proud moment for Pakistan, showcasing the country’s potential to revolutionise its agricultural sector. International collaborations, such as with the SRWIA, are key to enhancing Pakistan’s food systems, promoting self-reliance, and positioning it as a leading agricultural exporter.
