
Pakistan Prepares for 5G with National Fibre Expansion
— February 17, 2025ISLAMABAD (AIA) Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja has emphasised the need for a robust and high-speed telecom infrastructure to accelerate digital transformation and boost IT exports in Pakistan.
Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad on Monday, she reaffirmed the government’s commitment to leveraging the upcoming 5G spectrum auction as a key initiative for the country’s IT sector. She highlighted international 5G spectrum auction models, noting that their successful implementation has played a crucial role in driving IT sector growth in various countries.
Khawaja stated that the government aims to learn from these global models to maximise the potential of 5G technology in Pakistan. She added that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has engaged international consultants to conduct a comprehensive survey of the country’s existing IT infrastructure and assess its readiness for 5G deployment.
She also noted that the government is developing a National Fibreisation Policy to encourage private sector investment in telecom infrastructure, stressing that fibre expansion is essential for the effective rollout of 5G technology.
Expressing optimism about these initiatives, Khawaja said the government’s measures would attract both domestic and international investors, ultimately strengthening Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure and advancing the country’s digital transformation agenda.
