Pakistan Hosts Global Conference on Women in Nuclear Science

ISLAMABAD (AIA) A special session of the International Conference on Opportunities for Women in Nuclear Science and Emerging Technologies was held on Wednesday, bringing together global and national leaders to promote gender inclusion and expand opportunities for women in the nuclear field.
The session was attended by Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
The two-day conference, organised by the Pakistan Association of Women in Nuclear (WIN-Pakistan), aims to encourage women’s participation in nuclear science and related disciplines.
Speaking at the session, Grossi highlighted the IAEA’s Women in Nuclear (WIN) initiative, which has doubled the share of female employees within the agency in five years. He also commended Pakistan’s efforts in mainstreaming women in nuclear and allied fields.
Foreign Secretary Baloch acknowledged the contributions of Pakistani women in nuclear energy, health, medical physics, and radiopharmaceutical production. She emphasised the importance of empowering young women to pursue careers in nuclear science and emerging technologies while advocating for greater representation in policy and decision-making. She also underscored the need for stronger international collaborations, increased engagement between academia, industry, and government, and the expansion of mentorship and networking opportunities within WIN-Pakistan.
President of WIN-IAEA Jannette Donor shared her experiences in promoting women’s participation in various IAEA projects, while WIN-Pakistan President Dr Shazia Fatima outlined her organisation’s initiatives to support and inspire women in the field.
Held at the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA), the conference has brought together professionals and policymakers to discuss challenges and opportunities for women in nuclear science and technology.
WIN-Pakistan, a part of the global WIN network, is committed to advocating for the professional development of women in nuclear-related fields through education, networking, and policy initiatives. The organisation aims to foster an inclusive environment that empowers women in nuclear science and technology across Pakistan.
