Bangladesh Editors’ Council Decries Suspension of Journalists’ Secretariat Access

DHAKA (AIA) The Editors’ Council has condemned the Ministry of Home Affairs’ decision to suspend journalists’ accreditation cards, restricting their access to the Secretariat. The suspension follows a fire incident and has raised concerns over press freedom.
In a statement on Thursday, the council criticised the blanket restriction as unjustified and indicative of an authoritarian approach. While supporting efforts to reassess and review accreditation cards, the council emphasised the need for collaboration to address unprofessional journalism rather than imposing broad curbs.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued the order on December 27, temporarily suspending accreditation cards for journalists. The chief adviser’s press wing expressed regret over the measure, citing the Secretariat’s security as the primary reason. Plans to review and reissue both permanent and temporary accreditation cards were announced, with temporary passes expected to be available from December 30.
The Editors’ Council also voiced concerns about the draft Cyber Security Ordinance, 2024, approved by the advisory council on December 24. The ordinance retains police powers similar to those in the repealed Cyber Security Act, raising fears of potential misuse. The council called for amendments to address concerns and urged the government to incorporate feedback from all stakeholders.
The draft ordinance comes after the government repealed the controversial Cyber Security Act on November 7, following criticism over its impact on free expression and press freedoms.
