Karachi (AIA) A shocking investigation has exposed the alarming sale of unhealthy bottled water in Karachi, jeopardizing the health of millions of residents. The probe revealed that numerous bottled water brands fail to meet the minimum standards of water quality, posing grave risks to consumers.
Many bottled water brands have been found to have significant levels of bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants, including E. coli, Coliform, fecal matter, and heavy metals like lead and mercury.
The bottled water industry in the sprawling metropolis remains largely unregulated, with many manufacturers operating without proper licenses and neglecting essential quality control measures. Consuming contaminated water can lead to severe health issues, including gastroenteritis, cholera, dysentery, hepatitis, and cancer.
Locals voiced their concerns, stating that many new water shops had opened up in the city. These shops pose even greater risks as the proprietors dispense water without conducting any quality tests. The citizens demanded mandatory registration of water shops with the Sindh Food Authority (SFA) and the implementation of regular monthly water testing protocols.
Residents of Karachi are calling for stricter regulations and robust quality control measures to ensure the safety of bottled water. “We have the right to access clean and healthy water,” emphasized a concerned citizen. This exposé highlights the need for urgent action to address the issue of unhealthy bottled water in Karachi, protecting the health and well-being of its residents.
